The preferred location for the infrastructure is 200 metres downstream of the existing Gin Gin weir.

WaterNSW has been engaged by the Department of Planning Industry and Environment to prepare a final business case for delivery in August.

"The project is seeking to increase the efficiency of water released from Burrendong Dam intended for towns, farmers, stock and domestic supply and irrigators, while maintaining natural flow down the system fed by adjoining tributaries," a spokesman for WaterNSW said.

"WaterNSW has released an animation to provide a clearer understanding of how the proposed gated weir and fishway would allow for the capture of cancelled water orders from Burrendong Dam while also maintaining natural flows down the Macquarie system and providing an effective passage for fish."

WaterNSW is encouraging all "interested parties including landholders and recreational users" to participate in community engagement sessions.

"Stakeholder feedback has already shaped the concept design with a reduction to the height of the proposed weir, which will reduce impacts to aquatic and terrestrial environments," the spokesman said.

"WaterNSW is developing working groups with state and federal agencies and will hold workshops with interested local groups to further develop the operating requirements."

WaterNSW has modelled river flows to better understand how adjoining tributaries interact with the river.

"This information will inform and shape the design process and operation of the new weir to maintain natural flow down the river, as required under the water sharing plan," the spokesman said.
