The Dubbo born, St Johns junior and former Dubbo CYMS coach will be in search of a much needed win when play resumes, after the Bulldogs dropped losses to both Pay's other former club, the Paramatta Eels and the North Queensland Cowboys in the opening two rounds.
While Pay's future with the Bulldogs is unclear after last season's disappointing finish, signs from the training ground are looking good.
"Just coming in here and the boys being around one another, just getting that vibe back, where we're back training together and the way they've turned up," Pay said.
"They've turned up in great shape, some of their times are better than when they left."
"They've been working really hard at home, under trying circumstances, like everyone is in."
"It's great to be back."
Pay says he thinks the club's enthusiasm will make up for lost time, with the players returning full of energy and a desire to compete.
"We couldn't wait to get back around one another, the first session was great, the intensity that the boys brought, they jogged out there as if it was a game, it was fantastic to see," Pay said.
