Trolley's being dumped in the Macquarie River are a 'major concern' for care group

Dubbo Rivercare group, Rotary Club of South Dubbo, Dubbo Regional Council, the Clontarf Foundation, Stop the River Street Bridge group were among the groups to volunteer.

Dubbo Rivercare group president Ros Williams said although they have seen the amount of rubbish decrease of the years, this year they noticed one major issue in particular.

"Since the Deposit Container Scheme was implemented we've seen a huge difference in the amount of rubbish being dumped in and around the river, particularly with bottles, obviously, but we still see a lot of lolly wrappers, straws, paper, and trolleys," Ms Williams said.

"Trolleys are a major problem. We had a meeting with the manager from Woolies only a few weeks ago because primarily we're pulling out Woolworth's trolleys, obviously because of the location- being so close to the river.

"We believe the only way to have a fix there would be to have an Aldi's style trolley process, where you have to put in a coin. We never see an Aldi's trolley in the river.

" We want to encourage all of the supermarkets, and Target, to take that approach.

"Woolworth's said to us that customers wouldn't like the implementation of requiring a coin to use the trolleys, but they were also really concerned about getting rid of the single-use plastic bags and they did that and after a few weeks people got over it and moved on- we believe the same attitude would be accepted by the community with this and we'd like to see legislation at state level.

"Unfortunately, there's still a portion of the community that doesn't take waste management seriously- that's probably always going to be the case- but we've definitely seen improvement.

"We've also noticed a lot of school's getting involved this week which is really great to see. Hopefully, they become good citizens in terms of waste management."
