Trains were suspended indefinitely along the line as a result of the damage, with the heavy rain that's lashed large parts of the state also hitting the Blue Mountains.
Leura has received 278 millimetres of rain over the course of the weekend, resulting in the landslip.
Train services have been suspended between Lawson and Mount Victoria and buses being organised to operate a replacement service.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said, in a Facebook post on Sunday afternoon, that "we appreciate everyone's patience as teams work to investigate the damage".
Sydney Trains crews were working on repairing the damage as quickly as possible, but that the safety of the public was priority.
"Response crews are on site and working to make the area safe, however it is likely that the repairs will take a long time to complete," it posted to social media.
