The closing fixture of matchday 20 saw the Bergamo side slip to fifth place, behind Roma and out of the Champions League zone as the league began its second half.
Josip Ilicic flicked home with his heel for the Bergamo hosts on Monday as Duvan Zapata squared from the left but SPAL bounced back after the break, with goals to Andrea Petagna and Mattia Valoti.
The captain flicked in against his former team and six minutes later Valoti leapt past two defenders to drill in a clinical drive on the hour.
SPAL moved past Genoa and Brescia but remain in the drop zone, one point behind Lecce.
