Dubbo College has a cohort of 233 year 12 students who have completed the first set of English papers in their Higher School Certificate exams.
Advanced English students Archie Purcell and Tori Reynolds said they were reasonably comfortable with the exam questions.
"I was a little surprised by the essay question on Love, but very happy in how I handled it," Archie said.
"I felt well prepared and was able to adapt to the question quickly."
English Standard student Grace Gower said she liked the essay question. "It gave me a great opportunity to say everything we knew about the film Billy Elliot," Grace said.
"The question was broad but it gave you something to link back to."
English head teacher Genelle Farquhar said the students were able to well adapt their responses.
"The papers had a very good balance for rural students with the drought references making it very relatable," she said.
Principal, Marisha Blanco said staff and students were eager for the exams to begin with many participating in HSC coaching offered by the school over the last two weeks.
"Before entering the exam the students were both composed and focused. This was a reflection of the consistent effort by all staff to ensure students were well prepared," Miss Blanco said. Examinations conclude on Monday November 11.
