Operation Athena was established to target the trafficking and use of illicit firearms throughout Australia and involves police from each state and territory, with assistance from federal agencies like the Australian Border Force and Department of Home Affairs.
The operation was conducted last week and resulted in the seizure of more than 440 firearms across Australia.
In NSW, police conducted 582 safe storage inspections, 14 firearms prohibition orders searches, 15 weapons prohibition orders searches, seized 81 firearms and obtained 48 surrendered firearms.
"When in the wrong hands, firearms are dangerous, and a threat to the community," NSW Police firearms spokesperson and acting assistant commissioner Paul Pisanos said.
"Our continued partnerships with federal and state enforcement agencies are key to reducing the illicit movement, distribution and sale of these firearms across Australia," he said.
"The results from Operation Athena are a testament to the hard work of police right across NSW and the country, and our officers will continue to reinforce firearm compliance through regular safe storage checks.
"Firearms licence holders who store guns safely and securely, help police reduce the risk of firearms being stolen and diverted into the illegal market.
"The community should be reassured that those who continue to do the wrong thing and put others' lives at risk, will face the full force of the law."
