Ian David Walsh pleaded guilty to supplying a prohibited drug when he fronted court last week.
About 12.30am on August 28, the 40-year-old was seen in the passenger seat of a Holden Commodore on Curtis Street in Wellington.
In court documents police said they saw the vehicle leave a location "well-known" to them.
Officers followed the vehicle as it left the location and traveled along the Mitchell Highway.
As they followed the car police saw the passenger side door open and and a round object was thrown on the ground.
Police stopped the vehicle and found a clear, plastic bag. It was tightly wound into a ball on the ground.
Inside it was the drug ice, which police said was valued at about $5000 and capable of producing 280 street deals.
Walsh was subject to an intensive corrections order when he committed the offence, Dubbo Local Court heard on the day of his arrest last week.

His legal representative said Walsh struggled with drug addiction and Magistrate Brian Van Zuylen told the court Walsh had been to jail multiple times before for drug offences.
On August 29 Magistrate Gary Wilson sentenced Walsh to 18 months in jail with a 12-month non-parole period. He will be eligible for release on August 27, 2020.
