After the pair had an argument, Paul Patterson pushed the woman towards the front door of a house and she moved to call the police.
Patterson tried to take the phone and then pulled a handful of the woman's hair out.
According to court documents, after police arrested Patterson he told them that "she's lucky that's all that happened".
In a letter to Dubbo Local Court, Patterson said he was ashamed and he let a "stressful situation" get the better of him.
"This is something that is certainly not within my nature and I do not intend to do this again," Patterson wrote.
In court on Wednesday Magistrate Gary Wilson found Patterson guilty of assault and ordered him to be of good behaviour for 12 months.
