'Lawyer X' warned cops on Mokbel evidence

A go-to lawyer for Melbourne's Mokbel family, she was advising drug kingpin Tony Mokbel's sister-in-law Zaharoula "Roula" Mokbel, who was accused of obtaining $2.3 million in fraudulent mortgages.

The lawyer-turned-police informer told officers after Roula Mokbel's arrest in 2007 that she had read the brief of evidence against her.

"She mentions the Roula brief is lacking a statement from (a staff member) at NAB which would well and truly convict Roula for these deceptions," Chris Winneke QC, counsel assisting a royal commission into police informers, revealed on Wednesday.

An internal police memo said that information was passed to investigators.

An officer known as "Sandy White", who was involved in handling Ms Gobbo as an informer, admitted it would be troubling if that was true.

But he was unwilling to accept that the information was ever passed on.

"It's obviously very concerning to me to think one of the handlers might have passed on something like that, which was not consistent with the way we were operating," he said.

"I don't know if I'd go so far as saying it's a perversion of the course of justice without seeing what was done about it."

Ms Gobbo repeatedly ignored demands from handlers to not represent members of the Mokbel family while providing information for police to use against them.

She has claimed she was motivated to become a police informer to help lock up members of the Mokbel cartel, including Tony, his brothers and their underlings.

Ms Gobbo also passed on information to handlers about the defence strategy for Roula Mokbel, but it was not passed on to investigators.

Roula Mokbel is married to Tony's brother Horty. Ms Gobbo was also representing Horty and his brother Milad at the time.

She had been told by police she couldn't represent the men because she also acted for the witness who provided evidence against them, and had provided police with information that led to that person's arrest too.
