Joseph was presented with a medal for his efforts and was also selected by the local RSL to read his poetry out later in the year.
The poem, a sombre tribute to the ANZAC legend called on people not to forget about the sacrifices made by the ANZACs.
"It's very exciting for Joseph, he's a creative kid and there were so many entries," Mr Schwager, Joseph's teacher said.
"To receive a large medal like that is a real honour and we thank the Department of Veteran Affairs and the Koori Kids organisation for their recognition."
