David Christopher Henwood, 46, of Wellington faced a single charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.
The alleged victim in the domestic-related incident was a 52-year-old man.
Shortly after 5pm on Thursday officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District were called to a home on Glasson Street at Wellington, following reports a house was well alight.
Officers from Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the blaze.
A crime scene was established, and the investigation began. Police will allege the 52-year-old man was doused in petrol during the incident.
He suffered serious burns to more than 60 per cent of his body, police said.
He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wellington District Hospital and later airlifted to Concord Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
Police said Mr Henwood was later located at another Wellington residence where he was also treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for burns.
He was arrested and taken to Dubbo Hospital under police guard for assessment before being taken to Dubbo Police Station, where he was charged.
Mr Henwood appeared before magistrate Theresa Hamilton on Friday and did not apply for bail. He will reappear before Wellington Local Court on August 20.
