The group set off an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) at 12.15pm on Sunday.
The alert led to the initiation of a search and rescue operation from Canberra, with the closest available ambulance rescue helicopter dispatched to the scene.
The aircraft was currently overhead and a doctor was being winched down to the injured person, Inspector Skelly said shortly before 3pm.
Gospers Mountain is about two hours' drive from Kandos, and located within the Wollemi National Park.
