The officer was stabbed on Friday night and one man was arrested at the scene, a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP.
Police were called to the railway station about 6.45pm after reports of an assault.
It's alleged a 53-year-old man approached Police Transport Command officers and stabbed a male senior constable in the back.
The officer was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The alleged attacker is believed to have sustained injuries during the arrest and has also been taken to hospital. His condition is unclear.
The matter does not appear to be terror related.
Police established a crime scene, which was forensically examined.
Inquiries into the incident are continuing.
