Bushfire danger period runs from October 1 to March 31 each year and during these months NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews were put to the test due to the drought and wild storms.
Orana RFS District Superintendent Lyndon Wieland said he was very pleased that despite the very hot and dry weather conditions, firefighters only had one very large blaze in the region during the bushfire danger period.
The Goonoo Forest fire tore through 650-hectares of pine plantation and hook wattle scrub north of Dubbo for days in the week before Christmas.
"We had crews from out-of-area giving us a hand, but we did most of it ourselves," Supt Wieland said.
"It was burning through National Park area and [NSW] National Parks' crews also gave us a hand."

For the rest of the season, Supt Wieland said the district's 1800 volunteer firefighters from 62 brigades were kept busy with house and car fires, as well as motor vehicle accidents.
"There's hardly a week that goes by where we're not responding to a stolen car that's been set alight," he said.
Supt Wieland said the district's volunteer firefighters give up their time to help protect the community, not just during bushfire danger period, but every day of the year.
"Thank you to all the volunteers in Orana who made sure the community was protected from wildfire," he said.
He said landholders were liable for any damage a fire they light causes to neighbouring properties.
Can you still light a fire on your property?
Before lighting the fire ensure that:
- It can be contained and controlled within the specified area
- It does not contain toxic materials, such as rubber tyres, plastics, paint, etc; and
- It must not cause an air pollution problem by producing excessive amounts of smoke.
You must also check:
- Whether a 'no burn' day has been declared
- Whether a total fire ban is in force
- The expected weather conditions.
