Macquarie have helped shatter any illusions of a lop-sided RSL-Whitney Cup ladder with a decisive victory over Newtown at Victoria Park No 2 Oval on Saturday.

Newtown opener Lachlan Reid (42) top-scored in his first grade debut, but it was not enough as bowlers Joseph Haylock (3-26 off 8 and two unassisted run-outs) and Jason Green (1-23 off 6) helped the fifth-placed Macquarie restrict the first-placed Tigers to just 175.
Medway (41) then set the foundation for Macquarie’s run chase, and Jason Green (40) anchored the middle order before Haylock (16 not out) hit the winning runs to deliver Newtown only their third loss of the season.
“It’s good, coming from the bottom of the table, to be able to put it to one of the top three teams,” Haylock said.
“I had only taken two wickets for the season so it was nice to double my tally.”

Bowler Brayth Stevenson (1-6 off 1) dismissed Tom Barber (6) on the final ball of the 40th over.
James Hughes claimed 1-17 off seven overs in his final game before heading back to university, while Medway bowled eight overs, dismissing Newtown captain Mat Skinner (1).
“To score only 175 was below par for them,” Haylock said. “We gave ourselves something to chase and then batted accordingly.”
Green himself played a decisive role with the ball, dismissing the competition’s sixth most prolific run-scorer Ben Patterson (1) cheaply.
The Newtown all-rounder was unable to contribute with the ball, as he departed for the Northern Territory for the upcoming Imparja Cup.
“He’s one of the better strikers of the ball that I’ve seen in my 28 years in first grade,” Green said of Patterson.
“We were chasing 175, but we could have been chasing 400 or something.
“To get him out, that gave us a bit of a boost and we just kept going from there.”
He said “partnerships were the key”, and Medway’s role with the bat was instrumental in setting the tone, helping Macquarie to 70 by the end of the 14th over.
At the same time in their innings, Newtown were at just 2-44.
The upset sees Newtown (63) drop below RSL Colts (65) on the competition ladder, Colts being the only top-three side to record a win on Saturday.
But CYMS’ (55) loss at the hands of Rugby (29) draws them and Macquarie (also 29) closer to the competition’s top three and within reach of a finals berth.
Haylock paid credit to Newtown bowler Jesse Spang (4-42 off 8) for “taking wickets every time they needed one”.
