And it’s not just the competitors. The youngsters will bring with them their family and friends to cheer them on as they compete at one of Dubbo’s world-class sporting fields.
The annual event will bring together 850 juniors from under 8s up to 17 years from the Blue Mountains to Cobar, Walgett to Cowra and all the towns in between.
Add just one person coming along with them as a support and you have 1,700 coming into town for this one event alone.
The international standard athletics complex has been a success since it was officially opened back in 2014.
The facilities we have to offer here in Dubbo are equal to, if not better than those in metropolitan areas, meaning regional athletes don’t face any sort of disadvantage because they choose to live in the country.
It means the 850 competitors this weekend, and the thousands who have competed at the facility since it opened, are enjoying running, jumping and performing at the same type of facility as their city cousins do.
It means when they reach that NSW or Australian representative level there is somewhere local for them to train, and they also know the type of fields they will be competing on.
Looking at the rest of the weekend, and adding on what else is happening, with races at Geurie and Dubbo on Saturday and Sunday and markets on Saturday morning, we are looking at having a few thousand visitors coming to the city this weekend alone.
With holidays over and school back, it’s great for the city to be able to host the kinds of events that bring these numbers into town and help our economy during school time and the summer – when we would understand if people just wanted to stay inside.
Without the dedication of the groups that organise these events, the hours they put into the races and the carnivals, we wouldn’t see the same kinds of benefits around the whole region as we currently do.
It’s the people behind the scenes, those that maintain Barden Park, our parks and the race facilities, and those that put hours into organisation, that need to be thanked and congratulated each time Dubbo hosts an event that brings people in from far and wide. It’s going to be a great weekend for Dubbo.
