The former Macquarie Raiders first grade coach first became involved with the Rabbitohs when he was asked to draft a strategic plan for the club.
McLellan, a former general manager of the Fiji Rugby League, knew the club “needed to be tidied a bit’ and believed he was the man for the job.
“I’m not a young person anymore and I just wanted to make a difference,” he said.
“If I can leave the place in a better place than when I arrived, I’ll get some satisfaction out of that.”
The club has had a “major overhaul” with new faces on the committee as well as the playing ranks.
“We certainly respect what’s gone before us but it’s exciting times,” McLellan said.
“There’s some fresh blood there and some new ideas and we’ll be working to make sure we’re a valued member of Group 11.”
McLellan has already attracted former Macquarie reserve grade coach Jason Hill, and first grade players Jade Hooper, Etuate Gusivalu and Kurt Fuller to his new club.
“We were competitive last year, we just didn’t have the depth,” he said. “They’ve been brought here to play a bit of a leadership role.”
