That particular catch cry is something that annoys me to no end! Not only because it feeds negative attitudes about our city but also because it is also just plain untrue.
Holiday periods can certainly be a time of stress, especially for families with children that are on the lookout for things to keep their children occupied.
However, people shouldn’t be fooled into thinking there is nothing to do.
There is a abundance of attractions and activities that can make for a great day out.
Here are just a few of the facilities that Dubbo Regional Council own and operate on behalf of the community.
1. The Dubbo Aquatic Leisure Centre. The recently installed $800,000 splash pad and children’s water slides has made a visit to the Aquatic Centre an amazing experience for families and dedicated swimmers.
2. Elizabeth Park - Dubbo Regional Botanical Gardens. We all know about the state of the art Japanese Gardens, but a lot of residents are unaware of the newer biodiversity gardens and sensory garden. Elizabeth Park is a work in progress, and even right now you can see new parkland and facilities being added to the site. It’s certainly worth a visit. Find out more atdrbg.com.au.
3. The Wellington Caves. With Wellington being only a 40-minute drive away, it’s amazing how many people haven’t taken the opportunity to experience one of the true geological wonders of Australia.

4. The Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre always has a great lineup of shows.
The reality is we have a state of the art theatre in Dubbo and locals would be doing themselves a disservice to not go along and see a show or two. Visit www.drtcc.com.au.
5. The Western Plains Cultural Centre is a unique attraction that houses both our museum and art gallery.
It’s based in the Old Dubbo High School buildings in Wingewarra Street. No matter what time of the year you attend you always find something different happening. See www.westernplainsculturalcentre.org
Those are just some of the attractions that are operated by your council in Dubbo.
That list doesn’t include the Taronga Western Plains Zoo, wineries, cinemas, tenpin bowling, and many other fantastic activities that can keep the school holiday boredom at bay.
Australia Day nominations
Nominations are still open for Australia Day Awards for both Dubbo and Wellington.
Locally, our awards promote and recognise outstanding examples of citizenship and achievement during the current year, and/or outstanding service over a number of years to a local community or over and above normal employment duties.
Council issues awards for outstanding citizens, sportspeople and cultural people in the Local Government Area, as part of the national Australia Day Awards.
The Australia Day Award categories for Dubbo are:

* Young Citizen of the Year
* Sportsperson of the Year
* Young Sportsperson of the Year
* Services to Sports Award
* Cultural Person of the Year
In Wellington, Australia Day Award categories are:
* Citizen of the Year
* Senior Citizen of the Year

* Sportsperson of the Year
* Junior Sportsperson of the Year
* Community Event of the Year
* Community Service/Achievement Award
