The Circus West troupe has been busy with rehearsals throughout the week, with the group also including students from Dubbo West Public School and TAFE, under the direction of Paul Woodhead. Dubbo College teacher Deborah Dawson is also working with the group, organising costumes and makeup.
Circus West students Holly Shields, Conner Knight, Kailee Linnane, Joshua Aubila, Rachelle McLane, Bayleigh Wellington, Hallie Bourke and Jacob Mohr spent Monday at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School before working at the Sydney Trapeze School at St Peters.
On Wednesday the Circus West troupe moved to Sydney Olympic Park, where they rehearsed and performed until the Schools Spectacular opened at Qudos Bank Arena on Friday.
Also part of the 2018 Schools Spectacular are Aboriginal dancers Holly Faulds and Kyle Daley, who were selected in the prestigious NSW Public Schools Aboriginal Dance Company earlier this year.
This year represents the third time Year 10 student Holly has been part of the group and the first time for Year 9 student Kyle. The pair have been involved in rehearsals for the Schools Spectacular since August, working with teachers from the world-renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre.
Dubbo College teacher Vicki Budden is also in Sydney with Holly and Kyle, as well as three other college students, Shante Bower, Adarna Riley Coleman and Lleyton Wighton, who form part of the supporting Aboriginal dance ensemble.
Dubbo College executive principal Stacey Exner said she was very proud of the large number of college students involved in this year’s spectacular.
“Their selection for the Schools Spectacular is testament to their commitment and high level of skill,” she said.
“We are very much looking forward to the show, which will take place on Friday and Saturday in Sydney.
“Our Dubbo College students will be part of the 5000-strong cast of circus, dancers, singers and musicians from age five to 18.
“The Schools Spectacular presents these students with a great opportunity to learn from highly accomplished teachers and to work with like-minded students from throughout NSW.”
