Two students of Dubbo’s Macquarie Conservatorium will learn from one of the world’s finest and oldest orchestras at the Sydney Opera House from Saturday.

India de Sousa Shaw and Emma Newby, who play the violin and viola respectively, will be among 30 young musicians from regional NSW communities to be tutored by Staatskapelle Berlin and watch its revered conductor Daniel Barenboim.
The young musicians are members of the Regional Youth Orchestra NSW (RYO), established in 2016 by the Association of NSW Regional Conservatoriums.
RYO draws its musicians from the NSW regional conservatoriums, a network of 17 regional music schools funded by the NSW government to provide high-quality music education to regional schools and communities.
RYO members are aged between 12 and 18 years.
The association and the Sydney Opera House have been planning the meeting of the two orchestras for months.
Association president Anita Bellman said it had forged “wonderful partnerships” with a number of leading music organisations”.
“This exciting project sees the Sydney Opera House and the Staatskappelle Berlin collaborating with our youth orchestra to provide them with some amazing opportunities,” she said.
Bridgette Van Leuven, head of Children, Families and Creative Learning at Sydney Opera House, said her team was “proud to continue our ongoing partnership with RYO with the support of our classical music donors”.
“Through this education project with Staatskapelle Berlin, we hope to inspire young classical musicians across regional NSW by providing accessible opportunities and professional pathways for them to pursue creative endeavours and lifelong engagement with the arts,” she said.
On Saturday the students will work closely with 10 Staatskapelle Berlin musicians who will give them tutorials on selected movements from Brahms Symphonies.
Their rehearsals will be conducted by Staatskapelle Berlin music director, Victorien Vanoosten, who will also conduct their final performance.
The young musicians will also experience the thrill of watching and hearing a Staatskapelle Berlin rehearsal conducted by maestro Daniel Barenboim, and attend its opening concert at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday.
On Monday the education project will finish with a concert of movements from Brahms Symphonies performed by 30 Staatskapelle Berlin musicians, RYO members and students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. An “invited” audience will include families and friends.
