Jobs brought to Dubbo with establishment of Regional Rail Fleet maintenance facility

In 2015 Transport for NSW carried out a review of the NSW regional rail network to look at potential locations for the maintenance facility.

The review looked at options across NSW, but eventually settled on Dubbo.

“We know that our train customers want more comfortable and reliable journeys and that’s why we’re investing in a new regional rail fleet to replace the ageing XPT, XPLORER and Endeavour trains, as well as a new maintenance centre,” Mr Grant said. 

“This facility in Dubbo will be the home base for these new trains when they start to enter service in the early-2020s. The project will stimulate the local economy by creating jobs and opportunities for local business during the construction and operation stages.”

Dubbo Regional mayor Ben Shields said the creation of new jobs would be a welcome boost to an already booming economy.

“One of Dubbo’s greatest strengths is its diverse range of industry and employment opportunities and this rail facility continues to enhance that,” he said.

Dubbo was able to secure the service because of its location at the end of the regional rail service and range of industry, as well as its training and education facilities.

“We will look forward to seeing this project as it progresses, especially once construction gets underway next year,” Cr Shields said.

Earlier this year the local community was given the opportunity to provide feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors.

Mr Grant said planning approval would ensure the project was appropriately managed and its impact minimised.

“Early next year we will appoint a contractor to complete the final design, build, maintain and operate the new facility. They will also develop environmental management and associated plans to show how construction impacts like noise, vibration and traffic will be managed,” he said.

Mr Grant said the community would be informed at every stage of the regional rail fleet project.
