The man was believed to be visiting family in Orange.
Central West Police District Sergeant Brenden Turner said it appeared the man crossed over to the wrong side of the road while driving a Toyota Camry eastwards along the Northern Distributor Road, where he collided with the oncoming truck.
It happened just after 9.20am on the roundabout where Ophir Road intersects with the distributor.

He was trapped and freed by NSW Fire and Rescue, before being taken in a helicopter with the intention to go to Sydney.
However, Sergeant Turner said the aircraft turned around to head to Orange hospital, where the man died “a short time ago”.
Sergeant Turner said it is unknown what caused the driver of the Camry to end up on the wrong side of the road.
The 36-year-old driver of the prime mover – who is from Sydney – was uninjured, and he was taken to Orange hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing and is assisting police with inquiries.
Traffic is being diverted away from the scene, with the road likely to be re-opened later on on Monday afternoon.
Anyone with more information is urged to contact Orange police on 6363 6399.
