Rangers say at 4.72 metres, their saltie pips Katherine’s monster croc by just one centimetre.
The croc was 4.72m and was caught in a trap at Borroloola on Monday.
“We believe it is the biggest caught this year by one centimetre,” a NT Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman said today..
Assistance with removal was provided by Li-Anthawirriyarra Sea Rangers, Waanyi – Garawa Rangers, NTPOL and Roper Gulf RegionalCouncil.
The spokeswoman said the croc was caught in a trap that had only been put in a week ago following reports from the local police of a large crocodile on the upstream side of the McArthur River crossing within the Borroloola crocodile management zone.
Because of the poor condition of the Borroloola croc it was immediately put down.
Katherine’s big croc, at 4.71 metres, was capture after a decade-long hunt back in July.
The male saltwater croc was famously as long as the average family car.
A smaller 2.37 metre crocodile was also pulled out of the Katherine River in the same area, about 60km downstream of the centre of Katherine.
Of course a 4.27 metre croc was hauled from the Darwin Harbour in June which was missing a sizeable chunk of its tail, and may have claimed the record.
Almost 300 crocs have been caught in the Top End so far this year.
