It’s not every day you see a beach in the middle of Dubbo, and this weekend it’s not only a beach, but a beach full of rugby games. 

It’s the first of its kind for the Dubbo community, and at this stage organisers don’t know if it’s coming back or not – it’s all going to depend on how this first event plays out. 

The sporting field, unlike any other in country NSW, has seen close to 600 tonne of sand unloaded at the showground, setting the scene for the action-packed event on Saturday. 

The inaugural Beach to Bush rugby sevens competition, hosted by the Dubbo Rhinos, has 12 teams registered to play so far, and a large number of residents keen to have a look at what’s happening at the showground this weekend. 

When it was first announced back in September that the beach would be coming to the bush, the response was huge. 

Right across social media residents were excited by the prospect of something a little different coming to Dubbo for the weekend. 

An event that displays some of our finest rugby players playing in conditions they don’t normally play in – we would go so far as to say some of them (many of them) would never have played on a man-made beach that’s been created specifically for the purpose in the middle of a city before. 

And now it’s here, we’re keen to cheer on the local teams playing in the competition, on sand, at the middle of the beach which has been laid in the middle of the city. 

It’s great to see the support an event like this has received, with Dubbo Sands a major sponsor, tasked with delivering a massive 10 truck and dog loads of sand to the showground over the past few days to be then been laid out over the grass. 

Mental and health and disability organisation Wellways has also jumped on as the major sponsor, and support has come from NSW Rugby who will assist in the running of the event. 

The fast-paced games on the sand will surely entertain, but for those looking for something else as well, there will be plenty of attractions off the sand, with a DJ to perform on the day, races and activities for attendees to enjoy and participate in. 

And, even if you aren’t planning on going along for anything else – why not head over to at least see the beach.
