The Westview will screen Disney classic The Lion King on Friday November 16.
“I literally can not wait to see this movie on the biggest screen west of the Blue Mountains,” organisers said in a post to the Dubbo Westview Drive-In Facebook page.
Tickets to The Lion King and the comedy action film Smokey and the Bandit went on sale on Thursday night.
The Sunday night film would be The Greatest Showman, “the massive hit fresh out of the cinemas” starring Hugh Jackman, it was revealed on Friday.
The announcement the drive-in would operate one weekend a month has garnered huge interest on social media.
Readers flooded a post on the Daily Liberal Facebook page with comments expressing excitement about the revival of the icon after three decades.
“Wow, now my kids and grandkids can experience the drive-in theatre,” Annette Mackay said.
On Friday a spokesperson for organisers said they had once again been overwhelmed by “the positive support our community has shown us”.
They were receiving comments like “this is the kind of news I’ve been waiting for” and congratulations to the team for its efforts and Dubbo for its support of the project, the spokesperson said.
“We have also had a lot of positive feedback in regards to the movies chosen for our November event,” the spokesperson said.
“If anyone is interested… in keeping up to date with our future events they can follow our Facebook page Dubbo Westview Drive-In.
“Again, many of us have been waiting for someone to open the drive-in gates and now that it’s finally happening we are relying on the community’s support to keep those gates open.”
On Thursday the organisers invited feedback through a survey on social media.
“We have been overwhelmed by the results from our survey that has been taken by nearly 800 people is that 99.58 per cent of you want it to reopen and 77 per cent want it monthly,” they said via the Facebook page a day later.
Organisers reported the October 19-21 event attracted a total of 619 cars through the gates, bringing about 2544 patrons.
Among the attendees were people from all across NSW, the spokesperson said.
Posts on the Daily Liberal Facebook page suggest interest from people outside Dubbo.
“...awesome Dubbo....will look forward to that when im back again,” Robyn Blake said.
The Westview Drive-In was officially opened on October 8, 1970 and was understood to be the largest drive-in in country NSW.
It closed 14 years later, but memories of nights out at the drive-in lived on until it was revived for a special one-off event in 2017 that attracted about 6000 people across five sessions.
