Each year the Rotary Club of Dubbo West joins in Lift the Lid on Mental Illness, which is Australian Rotary Health’s annual fundraising day supporting mental health research.
The fundraising day, held on World Mental Health Day during October, is in response to alarming data showing one in five Australians will experience metal illness each year.
The Rotary Club of Dubbo West hosted headspace Dubbo staff members, Amy Mines and Kevin Saul, at its Lift the Lid on Mental Illness fundraiser.
Club spokeswoman Lyn Smith said members learned of the prevalence of mental illness in young people.
“We’ve all experienced friends or family with mental health problems but it’s disturbing how many young people are affected,” she said.
Earlier this month headspace Dubbo told of one in three young Australians between the ages of 12 and 25 years having high or very high levels of psychological distress.
Rotarians across Australia were encouraged by Australian Rotary Health to “hold an event and wear your most-eye-catching hat” for Lift the Lid on Mental Illness in 2018.
Mrs Smith said club members complied and brought items such as wine, chocolates and books for an auction that raised abut $300.
