The Pringle-owned Midnight Starlet finished seventh in the feature at Wentworth Park while it was a fairytale finish for Mystic Riot and trainers Peter and Jodie Lagogiane
The inaugural series climaxed with the world's richest greyhound race, worth $1 million to the winner, and Mystic Riot led all the way in a commanding performance to claim the prize.
"This is what greyhound racing is all about. At the age of 14, I had a dog," Lagogiane said after the win.
"I gave [Jodie] a kiss on the cheek [on Saturday afternoon] and said, 'let's go become millionaires tonight'. We've become millionaires tonight."
Mystic Riot ($5.50) pinged out of box seven and took control early while the Seona Thompson-trained Midnight Starlet ($6) fell back early and never really got into the race.
Jamella Jet ($9.50) threatened the leader late but had to settle for second while Sky Wave ($4.60) came home third.
Last night was only Mystic Riot's eighth start for the Lagogianes having previously been trained by Anthony Azzopardi in Melbourne.
“She was doing a few naughty things down there and her mind wasn’t on the job and Anthony said I’m going to send her back to the owners,” Lagogiane said.
“I said to Anthony can I have a go with her. He put it to the owners and here we are today.
“It’s just unbelievable. An unbelievable feeling. I never thought I’d feel like this.
“I’m so thankful for everybody that has been involved, my wife Jodie, and the kids, and all my workers, all my owners. This is just amazing.”
