Unfortunately, there was quite a few of our regular attendees not there for different reasons but their contribution to the 2018 season was not without some reward.
We look forward to the same support in 2019.
Congratulations to the players across the four teams who were honoured with trophies at the presentation dinner. The CYMS Old Boys continued their 21-year tradition with awards of their own.
KEVIN WALKOM THANKS CLUB FOR SUPPORT
A STANDING ovation for CYMS chairman Kevin Walkom followed his welcome address to guests at the dinner. Although he has been in ill health over the past three months, Kevin challenged himself to get through his prepared speech and he did that with dignity, one that has been very much of his makeup as chairman of CYMS for many, many years. Kevin thanked everyone for their get-well wishes while he has been in hospital and recently back at home with Carol and the family. The CYMS Family is something different, we know that. But Kevin recalled one young family, husband wife and children who visited him in hospital: “That visit was very special and showed what great people we have in our club at CYMS.”
Kevin signaled out all four-football sides that performed so well in 2018, three made the grand finals and we won Reserve Grade. There was also the Group 11 Club Championship and the Challenge Cup success over Guildford Owls. Kevin thanked all the players, coaches and staff, as well as Damien Porter who stepped up as chairman. Then there were the board members, the sponsors, committee members and supporters. Kevin didn’t miss one.
Kevin also thanked Brendon and Charmaine Chapman and their family for their continued support of the Indigenous Match. That comment was greeted with a presentation by Jyie Chapman to Kevin and Carol of an Indigenous Match Day framed jersey.
We pray for more positive results for Kevin in his fight back to good health.
The standing ovation for Kevin Walkom told the real story and showed what great esteem he is held in at the CYMS club.
JOHN GREY’S KEN MCMULLEN MEDAL SUCCESS
WINNING the prestigious Ken McMullen Medal at the Dubbo CYMS presentation dinner on Saturday night was a fitting reward for the work John Grey does for the club.
John, who came to us from Macquarie when at the time he was the first grade captain-coach, proved to be a win/win situation for CYMS. John’s contribution as a player to CYMS has been well documented but off the field he has been just as active. A couple of years ago he was the registrar, then CYMS representative on the Dubbo Regional Council’s Sports Council, a position he still holds. He has also been a part of the CYMS general committee with a number of major projects at this time still being worked on. Injury forced John out of the 1st grade grand final team this year but despite the hamstring problem he still put up his hand to help out with reserve grade, scored a great try and enjoy grand final success.
At the presentation dinner John spoke about how welcoming the CYMS club had been to him and wife Cara. In a short time John and Cara Grey (a past treasurer at CYMS) have injected some wonderful energy into the club and I don’t think they are finished just yet.
Congratulations John Grey and congratulations also to the other nominees for the Medal, powerhouse prop forward Jarryn Powyer, all round good guy and board members Shane Madden, as well as Reserve Grade coaches Joel Rapley and Nick Wilson.
BOY TIPPING PLAYER OF THE YEAR RECOGNISES A RISING STAR
A YEAR ago Bayden Searle was playing Under-18s for CYMS and fast-forward a season and he is the Boy Tipping Player of the Year. Bayden was the playmaker in coach Tim Ryan’s First Grade side and he backed himself to the limit with his kicking game and evasive running. To win this award Bayden was judged ahead of Jarryn Powyer, Sully Haycock, Viliame Turuva, Maddy Chapman, Grace Pilon and Kaitlyn Mason.
A MAJOR part of the CYMS presentation was the way the room was decorated, thanks to everyone who contributed there.
Also, thanks to Angela O’Hehir and Linda Haksteeg for the photographs and videos played during the presentations.
DUBBO CYMS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING will be held on Monday, November 5 from 6pm at the Macquarie Club.
GROUP 11 ANNUAL MEETING will be held on Sunday, November 11 from 10am at the Dubbo RSL Club.
