The Dubbo Community Men’s Shed member recently won the ABC’s Hard Quiz, not bad for someone who is recovering from two lots of surgery to remove a brain tumour.
One night, Andrew was playing along at home with the Tom Gleeson comedy quiz show when his wife suggested he have a go for real.
So he did.
Last Wednesday night, while a good number of his men’s shed mates were watching, Andrew took home the heavy Hard Quiz trophy after showing a handy knowledge of his chosen subject, Freemasonry.
I feel pretty proud and good about winning the trophy.

“I feel pretty proud and good about winning the trophy,” Andrew said.
“The other people were doing subjects that I had no idea about, and I got three correct in the first round, the multiple choice round which was on darts I did pretty well in, then when the people’s round came around, which was random questions on any subject, I pretty much nailed that.
“So my knowledge of Freemasonry and general trivial stuff won me the trophy, but I won it on the last question, so it wasn’t easy.”
Dubbo Community Men’s Shed secretary John Gibson said he and the other men’s shed crew were proud of Andrew’s achievement.
“We are very pleased for him, he mentioned he was going down to do the show a few weeks ago and we all wished him well, but we didn’t expect anything spectacular,” he said.
“But he came back with a smile on his face and he’s had to stay quiet until it was on TV on Wednesday.
“He is a good bloke and we’re all very proud of him, but I don’t think any of us will follow in his footsteps and go on the show, we’re not quite that smart.”
Andrew said he is glad that he took a punt and auditioned for the show.
“I am glad I listened to my wife and I wanted to choose an interesting subject, I am a proud Freemason and it seemed like a logical choice,” he said.
“I felt with other people picking subjects like the Brady Bunch and Kath and Kim I wanted to pick a subject that was a bit more unique.
“I am glad I did now, I was a little bit nervous at the start, I was taking it seriously, but it was a great experience.
”The trophy is going straight to the mantelpiece it’ll take pride of place.”
