A concerned Kerryann George on Tuesday called for “common sense”, “respect” and “stability in our political system”.
She found too few signs of those elements as the Liberal Party decided the future of leader and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull earlier that day.
He called a leadership ballot after intense speculation about a challenge from senior minister Peter Dutton.
Ms George followed updates from her store in Talbragar Street, and she urged MPs to change their ways.
“Malcolm Turnbull obviously had the majority of support because 48 to 35 is not a number worth going through all of this, I call it embarrassment in the media,” she said.
“And they need to learn to have better communication, have respect for whoever the prime minister might be and… if they don’t agree on a policy, they need to talk it out, like anybody does in business.”
The past decade has seen both Labor and Liberal prime ministers overthrown from within their respective parties, a history that prompted Ms George to speak out.
“I’m alarmed and disappointed from the day that the leadership spill happened when Julia Gillard knifed Kevin Rudd and it’s been an ongoing practice and it needs to stop,” she said.
“Because Australia is better than this and whoever it is behind the scenes, this is thuggery, it’s not even politics anymore.
“Australia is a democracy, and we don’t need to be having backroom politics running our country.”
