Mr Mason is a singer-songwriter, record producer and actor. The Reels shot to fame in the late 1970s.
“I still remember as a child, going ‘this is amazing that someone from Dubbo is on countdown’,” DREAM Festival chair Anne Field said.
The Artist of the Year Award is designed to provide inspiration for younger aspiring artists in the Dubbo region.
“We look for someone who has made it as a professional artist, and that’s across all artistic forms. We look for someone who has ideally been at the peak of their field and has continued to be an artist,” Ms Field said.
“We like to see that they give back to the community and like to see that they’re proud of where they come from. All of the artists we have had to date certainly tick those boxes.”
The award ceremony will be held at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre on October 25. There will be a cocktail party as well as a question and answer segment with Mr Mason.
“It’s so wonderful hearing the story of the person who has received the award, hearing what they went through to get to the peak of their career and really telling people that it’s possible to be successful in that field even when you live in a rural area,” Ms Field said.
“It’s not always as easy as when you’re in a metropolitan area but it can happen.”
Tickets for the event will soon be available through the DRTCC.
