Orana Mid-Western police report that about 6.25am on Thursday the man entered the Inland Petroleum service station on Cobra Street and threatened the female console operator with an old-style tomahawk axe, demanding money.
He took money from the till before demanding the console operator hand over her wallet and phone, police said.
They said the male left the store on foot and was last seen heading south on Fitzroy Street. After he left, the female staff member called triple zero.
Police described the male as being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in appearance with a thin build, about 170 to 180 centimetres tall and possibly unshaven.
Orana Mid-Western Police district Inspector Dan Skelly said detectives were following up on a number of leads.
“Police conducted a fairly extensive canvass of the area and has taken some information from local people who were in the area at the time,” he said.
“This has been a fairly brazen robbery at this time of the morning. The female console operator was distressed by the incident. He presented with a weapon and we would like to catch up with him as soon as we can.
“We ask anyone that noticed anything out of the ordinary, or saw someone run into to a particular house that looked fairly suspicious or anything suspicious, please come forward.
“In my experience, people that commit these kind of things, don’t go far from their house, unless they have a vehicle hidden around the corner, I don’t believe that he would have at this stage.”
