Ash Boatman made history in 2017 as the first Dubbo-based player chosen to coach a state side, when she led the NSW under 22 men’s side.
This year she’ll be accompanied by Inland Gypsies teammate Jen Hoar in coaching the women’s side at the championships in Perth.
“I had a lot of fun coaching the men’s team last year, it was a great experience, so it’s really good to be given the opportunity to do it again,” Boatman said.
“NSW Ultimate is a relatively young, developing state body and from last year to this year they have really come forward in leaps and bounds in the structures and the opportunities they have to offer so it’s really good to be involved in the pathway.”
Hoar said the chance to coach a state team was an exciting step forward.
“Ash and I have worked together over a long period of time to build women’s ultimate in western NSW and I’m excited to see how we can bring that knowledge, leadership and enthusiasm to bear at an elite level,” she said.
Dubbo Ultimate Frisbee Federation (DUFF) president Tim Hosking said it was “sensational” to see local players involved in elite ultimate.
“It’s something really valuable for our club because of the experience they bring back, and we can say that we in Dubbo are being trained by some of the best in the state,” he said.
Try-outs for the women’s, men’s and mixed teams will be held in Sydney on August 4 and 5, with expressions of interest open until July 31.
“It is absolutely open to everyone, so people should come down and have a go,” Boatman said.
“Even just the experience of playing with different players, you’ll gain something even if you don’t make the team. But in youth ultimate, you just never know what people are going to put out there on the day.”
The Australian Under 22s Ultimate Championships will be played at Perth from November 23-25.
