Member for Dubbo Troy Grant and Dubbo Regional Council Mayor Ben Shields toured the region on Monday to see the progress of the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Major Projects Fund.
As part of the funding, the car park at the Botanic Gardens was devoted $240,000 for the revamp and officially opened during their tour.
“Today’s been a wonderful opportunity to have a look at the progress of the investment made through the stronger communities fund.”
Mr Grant said the playground and car park at the Botanic Gardens would be a “massive enhancement,” to Dubbo.
“Dubbo is one of the fastest growing regional cities for a reason. The livability is just flourishing.
“Options were limited but now … We’re striving a head of places that were traditionally known for that like Orange, in our region, we’re just really kicking Orange’s butt.
“It’s well overdue, i’m very proud to play a part in it and the council are partnering with all the communities to make it happen.”
There will be a liberty swing and a bathroom facility suitable for families with children living with a disability. Dubbo resident Tracy Hanna partnered with Dubbo Regional Council and raised $30,000 to ensure the liberty swing would make the playground inclusive.
“A family who may have a disabled child can go to one to place and all of their children can play together. It’s amazing and it’s needed ... People will be able to come from far and the surrounding towns.”
Mayor Ben Shields said this was part of a natural progression towards Dubbo becoming the most inclusive city in Australia.
“This is the way Dubbo is organically moving, on one hand we had the state coming to the party and helping council with the investment and also making sure our health facilities are up to scratch with the gigantic investment in the base hospital redevelopment.
“The council is continuing that with the Disability Inclusion plan with $500,000 every year for four years devoted to make sure [everything is up to scratch] our gutters and basic change room facilities are up to scratch.
“It is very good, it’s good to know we have different levels of government working together.
“I’ve got this vision that Dubbo should be the most inclusive city in Australia when it comes to disability inclusion. With partnership with state, we’re not far off that.
“It all works in a way that contributes the society of Dubbo more livable and to encourage people to move here and be part of this community.”
