The recent cold snap has seen an increase in calls to Dubbo Regional Council’s customer service team, with customers reporting frozen water metres and busted pipes across the region.

A council spokesperson said staff were working very hard to meet the amount of calls that coming in.
Cold weather tips:
- cover your water meter when you know frosty or sub zero weather is on the way
- a hessian bag or old tyre cut in half, even a plastic bucket – anything to insulate against the cold
- also cover any exposed outside pipes to provide insulation against the cold
- if frosty conditions are predicted it would be advisable to have a container of water on standby the night prior to such an event
- do not pour boiling or hot water on a frozen meter or pipeline. The most appropriate response is to let the frozen pipe unfreeze over time. You can pour luke warm water on the affected spot but nothing hotter than 37 degrees (body temperature
If you experience a break in the water line (any breakage or leak up to, and including, the meter is council's responsibility). If this occurs, ring Council immediately on 6801 4000 and report the problem.
If you experience a break in the water line on the house side of the meter, the repair is the property owner’s responsibility. If this occurs:
- isolate the water to your property by turning off the supply at the meter (if not frozen)
- call a plumber immediately to rectify the break/leak
