Police appealed for people to use basic commonsense when using heaters and wood fires in their homes.
“Home heating is a major cause of house fires and they are avoidable by ensuring you take action to minimise risks associated with home heating,” police said.
Police posted a home heating safety fact sheet on their Facebook page which included the following information:
“Extinguish all flames and embers completely before going to bed or leaving the house.
“Never leave children or animals unsupervised near heaters or open fire.
“It is important for you and your family to develop a Home Fire escape Plan and practise regularly.
“Open fires should be guarded by a fine mesh screen to prevent sparks and logs rolling out.”
