UPDATE FROM POLICE:
Police are investigating the circumsatnces surrounding a truck crash near Dubbo on Wednesday.
Shortly before midday, an empty B-Double heavy vehicle was travelling north on the Newell Highway about 25kms south of Dubbo.
The truck left the highway crossing the southbound lanes, travelled through scrub on the side of the road and struck a tree.
The truck was extensively damaged in the crash and as a result of suffering injuries from the impact the driver was unable to get out of the vehicle.
A member of the public assisted the driver until the arrival of emergency services.
The driver was released from the cab and treated at the scene before being airlifted to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.
Officers from Orana Mid Western Police District attended the location and commenced inquiries into the cause of the crash.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward and contact local police or Crime Stoppers.
The Newell Highway has reopened following an earlier truck crash near Tomingley.
The highway was closed while a rescue helicopter landed to transfer the truck driver to hospital.
The truck driver is in a critical condition.
The Newell Highway is closed 29km north of Tomingley following a truck accident.
Emergency services, the RMS and a rescue helicopter are all attending the scene.
Diversions are in place with northbound traffic being diverted along the Tomingley-Narromine road to the Mitchell Higway in Narromine, the diversion is suitable for all vehicles.
Southbound traffic is being diverted along Obley Road to Renshaw McGirr Way in Yeoval, and then to Parkes to rejoin the Newell Highway. This diversion is suitable for all vehicles with the exception of oversized trucks.
