After years of campaigning there were cheers back in 2016 when it was announced Dubbo would have an integrated cancer centre as part of stage three and four of the Dubbo Hospital redevelopment.
Now it’s becoming more and more closer to a final reality.
While those who need the centre are the biggest winners to come from the whole project, it’s also benefiting the wider region in more ways than one.
More doctors, more specialists, more employment opportunities for local residents and the flow on effect from all of those people and their families moving into the Dubbo region.

But it’s still the patients who in 2021 when the centre is open, will be the real winners.
It is no secret that Western NSW has been left behind when it comes to cancer treatment, with so many patients forced to drive long distances to Sydney for treatment, adding stress and strain for so many families at a time where they are already doing it tough.
The integrated centre is a step in the right direction and even for people further west, it would reduce the amount of travel time and hopefully have a positive impact on their recovery.
Keeping patients around family and friends you would expect be a huge boost for their mental and physical recovery along the path of treatment.
When combined with the improved facilities and services provided by stage three and four of the hospital, the cancer centre will give the region’s healthcare a welcome boost.
We are excited about the new look of the centre as well, with the schematic designs showing a fresh looking centre full of space, privacy and natural light.
The natural light being brought into the centre adds to the wellness of the new space, again with the hope it will assist in patient recovery.
It’s great to see and really shows us the hours of work that has been going on behind the scenes since the Western Cancer Centre was first announced.
The cancer centre is part of stage four of the hospital redevelopment which is set to be completed in 2021.
