The Trangie Magpies played away but gave the Gilgandra Panthers, the defending premiers, a run for their money for a good percentage of their game while the Baradine Magpies downed the Binnaway Bombshells in a rugged encounter .
While the Trangie black and whites eventually went down to the Panthers they most certainly signalled they will be a competitive unit in the competition. Trangie kept Gilgandra supporters nervous as the two teams went to the half-time break holding just a two point advantage, with the score being 16-14.
The scoreboard remained unchanged until well into the second half with the two teams both being called upon to do some stout goal line defence as they traded field position and possession up and down the ground.
Finally a neatly-placed grubber kick by one of the Panther’s best, halfback Luke Ritchie, and a brilliant bootlace pick up from fullback Laiten Diggs saw him over the line and the home side edged ahead.
Some Trangie ill-discipline in the later stages of the game did little for their cause and they paid the penalty with the Panthers racing in another three tries to claim a hard fought 38-14 win.
At Baradine, the home side was coming off a big loss to Trangie in round one and they were up against a Bombshells outfit also looking for a first win of the season.
It was to be a rugged affair and anyone’s game at half time, the score being 16-all.
It was a combination of youth and experience that finally steered the Magpies to a solid 40-22 win, with young guns Brandon Worrell and Riley Catts being outstanding while the more experienced Jack Ramage and Kyle Head provided great leadership.
In the other game, Gulgong proved to strong for Dunedoo and scored a convincing 46-12 victory.
Kyle Alexander and Cal Ruming both scored doubles in the comfortable victory while Brad James, fresh from playing for the Castlereagh-Barwon representative side on Saturday, booted a perfect seven-from-seven conversions.
