Although the winner of nine races, Rusty Motorbike can be inconsistent but responded to the riding of talented Canberra-based Billy Owen for a convincing win.
Close to the lead from the outset, Rusty Motorbike ($3.60) kicked clear in the straight and won by over a length from Cuban Lass (Shannon Fogg, $3.70) with Butterfly Sky (Michael Wade, $2.50 equal favourite) coming from well back to finish third.
Owen, who rode four winners at the recent Cootamundra Picnics, repeated the feat at Tomingley scoring on Robb’s Bulbadah ($2.10 fav), Vai Avanti ($2 fav) and Rusty Motorbike, as well as on the Kylie Kennedy, Narromine-trained Barrowland ($3).
Ace Lightning, the first of Rodney Robb’s four winners, was ridden by 17-year-old Ridge Wilson who made the long trip from Inverell.
Taking the lead before the home turn, Ace Lightning ($5.50) held on to beat Mr Swift (Ashley Boyd, $3.40) and Black Comedy (Ricky Blewitt, $11) in the Think Water Outwest/JD McGaw Memorial Class 2 Handicap (800m).
At the presentation, Robb predicted a good future for Wilson, who had also ridden the Geoff O’Brien, Quirindi-trained Mahalia ($ ) to an all the way, six lengths win in the Eric Pugh Memorial Maiden Plate (800m).
Organisers were pleased with the very good crowd at the annual Tomingley meeting.
Following the Anzac Day meetings at Bathurst and Nyngan, Dubbo will race on Friday and Coonabarabran on Saturday.
