Taronga Western Plains Zoo is celebrating 40 years for the wild and the Daily Liberal is proud to present a special publication to commemorate the milestone.

“Taronga Western Plains Zoo has a rich and diverse history of which we can all be incredibly proud,” zoo director Steve Hinks said.

“Whether you have been to the zoo once or twice, or you’re a frequent visitor, the zoo is an iconic attraction not only to the Dubbo region, but on a national level as well.

BIG AND SMALL: The zoo's team of keepers watch over the tiniest of creatures to the grandest of creatures.

“We hope to share with you some of our memories and highlights from the past four decades in this special publication

“After officially opening the zoo gates on February 28, 1977, we have experienced huge successes in breeding and conservation programs for the animals in our care, both here and in the wild, as well as from a commercial standpoint through the amazing experiences and offerings we have built for our visitors.

THE CUTE FACTOR: Taronga Western Plains Zoo has experienced a baby boom in the past few years, with adorable new additions like this elephant calf.

“We’ve even been lucky enough to have a visit from the Queen in 1992!

“We can now celebrate more than nine million people passing through the zoo’s gates since opening, and we look forward to many more to come.

“Thank you to our valued partners throughout our history; the zoo wouldn’t be what it is today without your support.

“Forty years on, it’s the perfect time to reflect not only on our breeding and conservation highlights, but also the unrivalled visitor experience here at Taronga Western Plains Zoo that is continually being recognised as one-of-a-kind.”
