Judy Jakins AM has made her mark on the city and endeared herself to many of its residents.
The community stalwart will be particularly missed by members of the Rotary Club of Dubbo Macquarie who tell of a hard worker who is always “first to put her hand up”.
Club president John Stonestreet says she has “public interest at heart”.
Mrs Jakins, a former Member of the NSW Legislative Council and Dubbo city councillor, is headed to Goondiwindi in Queensland on Thursday to be with family.
After 35 years in Dubbo, she is “sad to be leaving”.
“You make a lot of friends in 35 years,” almost 78-year-old Mrs Jakins said at her final club meeting. “I will miss my friends.”
In recent years Mrs Jakins has reduced her volunteer activities in the city. “I was going to a meeting every night,” she said.
The avid volunteer narrowed her focus to two organisations she “loves”, Rotary and the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Dubbo base
Recognition of her contribution to Rotary has included the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship. The road leading to the RFDS base in Dubbo has been named Judy Jakins Drive, acknowledging her leadership in its establishment and development.
Mrs Jakins said helping to get it off the ground was the “best thing” about her time in Dubbo. “I loved being involved in it,” she said.
