Cellist Elizabeth Meadows and viola player Emma Newby received scholarships to attend the Sydney Youth Orchestra (SYO) Summer School, which kicks off in the state’s capital on Monday.
The Dubbo pair will take part in the week-long program, along with Brock Johnston of Gilgandra and Trundle’s Simeon Kelly.
Elizabeth, 13, aspires to be a world-famous cellist.
She is currently borrowing a cello from her high school, but would love to own her own instrument one day.
“I think opportunities to attend school holiday workshops like SYO Summer School, which is open to all kids of any level of ability, is brilliant,” she said.
“Country kids enjoy meeting and working with the city kids, learning new skills and making new friends.”
Emma, who is 16 and hopes to pursue music in tertiary education, travels to Bathurst once a fortnight for viola lessons.
“I am looking forward to the opportunity to play with other students at a similar level in music at SYO Summer School,” she said.
Brock travels from Gilgandra to Dubbo for his weekly violin lesson.
He said at the summer school it would be good to meet teachers and conductors and see the places where SYO learned and performed.
“I am most looking forward to seeing where I might be able to go in the future with a career in music, which SYO helps make possible,” Brock said.
