The second-placed Blues and Tigers, in third, meet in a club day one-day match at Lady Cutler 2 on Saturday.
Macquarie sits one point ahead of Newtown and just two behind ladder-leading Rugby, who takes on CYMS this round.
Macquarie has lost just once this season, winning its first three games before going down to South Dubbo and then settling for a rain-affected draw against CYMS.
The batsmen have been key to that run of results, three of the RSL-Whitney Cup’s top five run-scorers at this stage play for the Blues.
Saturday shapes as the biggest test so far for Newtown’s under strength attack.
The Tigers have been without a number of regulars at times this season but have still impressed when beating CYMS, defending premiers RSL-Colts and Rugby.
There will be plenty of pressure on Newtown seamers Bailey Edmunds, Bart Goodman and Dale O’Donnell.
Making Newtown’s task even more difficult is the fact Western Zone representative Jordan Peacock hasn’t been named.
Club day action sees the the Blues’ and Tigers’ second grade sides do battle next door at Lady Cutler 4 while Newtown Gold and Macquarie Blue will play at Lady Cutler 1. Newtown Black and Macquarie White will play at Lady Cutler South 3 while Newtown White, the third of the Tigers’ RSL-Kelly Cup sides, will play at Lady Cutler South 1.
