Moran was wicketkeeping for Western against Newcastle in the final game of the Country Championships northern pool carnival at Inverell when the injury occurred.
A delivery from spearhead opening bowler Ben Patterson bounced just before Moran and hit him on the end of the thumb.
An x-ray that day revealed he had broken it and he will now have surgery on Wednesday.
“It didn’t feel right (straight away) and I kept on keeping and then at the end (of the 50 overs) I took the glove off and couldn’t move it,” Moran said.
The fact his side was beaten by Newcastle on Sunday, ending Western’s hopes of defending it’s Country Championships crown, made the injury all the more painful.
A regular at the top of the order, Moran was unable to do that against Newcastle and instead came in lower n the order when the match was already slipping away from his side.
“I’m a little disappointed in myself that I couldn’t have helped the boys because I feel I could have helped in that situation,” he said.
“I feel I let the boys down a bit but we tried our best to do it.”
A trip to the specialist on Monday revealed the extent of the injury and Moran now faces a stint on the sidelines.
The Australian Country incumbent confessed he will definitely miss the Orana Outlaws’ Plan B Regional Bash Super Weekend at Orange’s Wade Park on November 18 and 19.
Moran was set to captain the Outlaws this season after being one of the side’s standouts in the run to last season’s title.
However, he has high hopes of being fit for the Australian Country Championships, should he make the NSW Bush Blues squad, in January.
After his success last season, combined with his classy 80 on day one of the carnival at Inverell on Friday, the Western Zone captain is expected to be named in the NSW Country squad.
