And he pays particular attention to his home town Coonamble’s cup meeting each year.
Lane will make the trek from the central coast to the central west this weekend with a live cup hope in the form of Choice Larga.
The gelding will look to end a run of outs when he lines up in the $45,000 feature over a mile.
On paper, the six-year-old gelding’s form doesn’t look spectacular.
He hasn’t won since July of last year, but a drop back in class on Sunday looks to suit.
Choice Larga, a winner of five races from 45 starts and more than $180,000 in prizemoney, has been competitive in metropolitan company in his past two starts against the likes of Chris Waller’s pair Wayanka and Invincibella.
Early markets through tab.com.au have Choice Larga, which will be ridden by Ben Looker, rated a $2.50 favourite for Sunday’s race.
Second favourite at $3.60 is the topweight Present Sense, prepared at Tamworth by Craig Martin.
Peter Graham will take the ride aboard the six-year-old, which has missed a place just once from its past 10 starts.
A third placing in the Narromine Cup in August was followed by another third in the Gunnedah Cup, before he saluted at the non-TAB Barabba Cup.
Dubbo interest in the race will be with Something Borrowed, trained by Justin Stanley and to be ridden by Kody Nestor, Ken Dunbar's mount Subway Surfer, and the Garry Lunn-prepared Cuban Lass.
