Foodbank, Australia’s largest hunger relief organisation, is holding a hunger relief drive this month.
The Foodbank Shop and Share campaign matches donations of products from specific brands with customer purchases at Woolworths Delroy Park, Dubbo, Riverdale and Wellington.
Arthur and Helen Woollams, who run the Food Barn in Narromine, are one of the organisations who operate through Foodbank.
The Woodlams assists pensioners and those with a healthcare card to receive discounted groceries. About 45 people per week get food from the Food Barn, Mr Woodlams said.
People travel from as far as Warren for the food packages, Mr Woodlams said. The smallest food package contains more than $120 worth of food for $15.
Foodbank acts as a pantry to charities and community groups who feed the hungry. It’s a conduit between the food industry’s surplus food and the welfare sector’s need.
The non-for-profit organisation ships 29,434 kilograms of food to the Dubbo region, which includes Gilgandra, Narromine and Wellington each year. Last year it supplied 53,516 meals to people in need.
Participating brands in the Shop and Share campaign include: the Woolworths food range, Ardmona, Devondale, John West, Chicken Tonight, Old El Paso, Vetta, McCain, Helga’s, SunRice, SPC, Primo, Mount Franklin, Continental and Sanitarium.
Woolworths Dubbo group manager Shannon Johnson said Woolworths was proud to once again be supporting the campaign.
“All customers need to do to play their part is purchase one of the many participating products across our stores when they shop with us in July and know that by supporting the brands that support Foodbank they will be helping families in need across the region.”
