After surveying the community, Dubbo Regional Council has developed three concept plans for the Wellington Pool Complex.
A structural integrity assessment was undertaken on the pool complex last year. It found the pool was in “poor to very poor condition” and was within two years of its life expectancy.
Major structural defects were found in the Olympic pool, medium pool, and toddler’s pool, change rooms, the filtration building and systems, and the plumbing and reticulation system.
To have the complex ready for swim season, council spent $70,000 on temporary repairs. However a plan is now underway to ensure the pool will last for the next 50 years.
Council director parks and landcare services Ian McAlister said about 640 submissions from the Wellington people were received in related to the plan for the pool.
The top six preferences for the pool complex were for a 50 metre pool (either six or eight lanes), a children’s playground, kiosk/social area, a large splash pad and an outdoor learn to swim pool.
Of those who responded during council’s consultation period, 83 per cent of those said they wanted the pool to remain in its current location.
Following the consultation, three plans for the pool have been created, Mr McAlister said, ranging in price from $7 million to $7.6 million. The plans will go back to the public for consultation.
Council has $3.75 million available for the work, including $3 million from the Stronger Communities Major Projects fund. A grant application for the funding to be matched has been submitted to the NSW government.
