Dubbo College Senior Campus deputy principal Craig May came up with the idea of purchasing a $2000 pass to a luxury box for Wednesday’s State of Origin and raffling it off, with the proceeds going to the Ryan Medley Appeal.
Twenty-eight-year-old Ryan Medley was injured in a Group 11 reserve grade match for Dubbo CYMS on June 7 and is currently in Royal North Shore Hospital.
He faces a long road to recovery and the Ryan Medley Appeal was established by CYMS to help Ryan, his wife Casey and his family.
The pass was one of 10 being sold by the Ryan Medley Appeal, so the initial purchase already helped, but the school has already sold more than 50 tickets with anything above the initial $2000 purchase price being donated straight to the appeal.
“John Wade from Delroy Campus and myself were looking at ways we could help and then half an hour later I saw the post from Kevin Walkom that they were selling the $2000 tickets to Origin,” Mr May said.
“I went and saw the boss and asked if I could have $2000 to purchase one, and he said if we sold less than 40, we would just have to absorb the costs.
“However we started organising it on Friday and here we are on Monday and we have already sold between 50-55 tickets.”
Tickets will remain on sale until Friday afternoon, when the draw will take place. The winner has to be able to attend State of Origin game two on Wednesday, June 21.
The pass allows one lucky person to view the game from a private box, along with former Origin players, silver service dining and drinks provided.
In addition, if the winner can be in Sydney next Tuesday morning, they can attend the Captain’s Run training session and meet the players at the end.
“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s a chance to donate to a very worthwhile cause but also have the chance to win this great prize,” Mr May said.
“The response we have had has been amazing. We’ve had teachers, former students, football players, so many people purchasing tickets.
“Ryan was such a terrific kid who came through our school. He was the captain of the cricket team, played in the CHS cricket team and in our rugby league side and he had a personality that drew people to him.”
To be a chance of winning the State of Origin pass, purchase a raffle ticket by contacting Craig May on 0478 608 882.
The winning ticket will be drawn on Friday afternoon at 3.30pm.
